๐Ÿ’ฌ What an Attachment Style Actually Describes

Attachment style is a shorthand for how you behave when a relationship gets close, particularly when it feels uncertain. It is not a personality type and it is not fixed. It describes a pattern you learned, usually early and usually for a good reason at the time.

The useful part is not the label. It is noticing the specific move you make when you feel unsure, because that move is usually automatic and usually invisible to you while it is happening.

Answer for how you actually are rather than how you would like to be. The honest version is the only one worth having.

Twelve statements about how you behave in close relationships. Answer for how you actually are rather than how you would like to be, since the useful version of this is the honest one.

๐Ÿงญ What to Do With the Answer

Whatever came out, the label is the least useful part. What matters is the specific behaviour underneath it: the text you re-read, the reply you delayed, the thing you decided not to say.

Attachment patterns shift, and they shift most reliably in relationships with people who behave predictably. That is not a thing you can do alone, which is why the honest advice for the harder results is to talk to someone rather than read more about it.

If this is landing during a breakup, our writing on the no contact rule and how long it takes to get over someone covers the practical side.
